What is known so far
On June 12, 2026, a fatal collision occurred on Interstate 15 near Levan, Utah. Traffic had slowed because of road construction. Investigators say an SUV struck a vehicle ahead, pushing it into another car. All three vehicles left the roadway.
Scott LaVar Lichfield, 66, was a passenger in the car that was struck. He was seriously injured and later died in hospital. Christine Chao, 44, of California, has been charged in connection with the crash. Investigators say a search of her phone showed that a pornography website had been accessed less than two minutes before the collision. They also reported finding no skid marks. [1–3]
These are allegations in a pending criminal case. A charge is not a conviction, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. [2, 3]
The key issue is distraction
The case highlights a clear road-safety risk: looking away from traffic or diverting attention while driving can make it harder to react to changing conditions. Distraction can come from many sources, including a phone, navigation, messages, or other content.
The information released so far does not support a general claim that pornography use causes violence or crashes. The allegation in this case is that a driver was distracted. For road safety, drivers should not handle a phone while driving and should keep their attention on the road.
Self-reflection without shame
PornLess focuses on a different, personal question: does someone’s pornography use fit their own needs and goals? A single news case says nothing about the habits or character of other people who use pornography.
Anyone who wants to reflect on or change a habit can start with small, self-directed steps—without shame or a premature diagnosis. The free PornLess self-check can prompt reflection; it does not replace professional advice or diagnosis.
